Steal My Massachusetts Summer Bucket List (Central MA Edition)
By Annie Oakman | AnnieOakman.com
Summer in Central Massachusetts hits different when you know where to go.
I grew up here, and every year I'm reminded just how much this part of the state has to offer and how underrated it is. You don't need to drive to the Cape to have a great summer. You don't need to fight traffic on Route 6 or pay $40 to park. Everything on this list is within reach of Central MA, and most of it is free or close to it.
Here's my personal summer bucket list. Save it, share it, and let me know how many you check off.
🏊 Swimming Holes & Lakes
One of the best things about Central MA in the summer is the water. We've got lakes, reservoirs, and state park beaches that are genuinely beautiful and rarely as crowded as the coast.
Hopkinton State Park Beach: A classic. Sandy beach, lifeguards, picnic areas. Great for families.
Lake Dennison Recreation Area, Winchendon: A hidden gem up north with a nice sandy beach and camping nearby.
Dunn Pond State Park, Gardner: Small and peaceful. Great for a weekday escape.
Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester: Right in the city, with public access points and boat rentals nearby.
Stiles Lake, Spencer: Beautiful setting, especially on a calm morning.
Pearl Hill State Park Pond, Townsend: Worth the drive north. Charming and uncrowded.
Singletary Lake, Sutton: A lovely spot in southern Central MA that's worth adding to your list.
Pro tip: Check MassDCR's website before you go as some spots require day-use fees or advance reservations in peak summer.
🥾 Hiking & Outdoor Adventures
Central MA has some seriously underappreciated hiking. Whether you want a quick trail or a half-day adventure, there's something here for every fitness level.
Wachusett Mountain, Princeton: You can hike to the summit or take the auto road. Either way, the views are worth it. Pack a picnic.
Purgatory Chasm, Sutton: One of the coolest geological formations in the state. Kids love it. It's rocky, fun, and free.
Mount Watatic, Ashburnham: A more remote climb with big payoff views. Not too long, but definitely gets your heart rate up.
Crow Hills, Leominster State Forest: Great for beginners and families. Pretty pond views and relatively flat trails.
Redemption Rock, Princeton: A short, scenic hike with a big rock formation at the top. Easy and rewarding.
Moore State Park, Paxton: More of a peaceful walk than a hike. Beautiful wildflowers, a mill pond, and old stone walls. It's one of my favorites.
Midstate Trail Day Hike, Charlton to Spencer: If you want something more ambitious, pick a section of the Midstate Trail. The Charlton to Spencer stretch is a great starting point. It runs 92 miles through Central MA and has some stunning stretches.
🍓 Farms & Pick-Your-Own
This is summer in Massachusetts. Blueberries. Peaches. Farm stands. I genuinely look forward to this every year.
Tougas Family Farm, Northborough: Pick-your-own blueberries, strawberries, peaches, and more. A Central MA staple. Get there early on weekends.
Nourse Farm, Westborough: A great pick-your-own spot for strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and more. Worth having on your summer rotation.
Bolton Orchards: A solid option in the area with apples, peaches, and summer produce.
Davis Farmland, Sterling: More of a family experience with animals and activities for little kids, plus a farm stand.
Davidian's Farm Market, Northborough: A neighborhood go-to for fresh local produce and farm stand finds.
🎶 Local Events & Summer Entertainment
You don't have to go to Boston for a great summer night out. Central MA has more going on than people realize.
WooSox Games at Polar Park, Worcester: If you haven't been to a WooSox game yet, this is the summer. Polar Park is legitimately one of the nicest minor league stadiums in the country. Great for families, great for date night. Get tickets early for weekend games.
Brimfield Antique & Flea Market: This is a big one. Brimfield happens three times a year, with summer shows in July and September. It draws dealers and shoppers from all over the country. Even if you don't buy anything, it's an experience.
Hot Night in the City Arts Festival, Worcester: A vibrant summer arts festival that showcases what Worcester's creative community is all about. A great one to put on the calendar.
Summer Concerts at Hanover Theatre, Worcester: Check their summer schedule. There's always something worth seeing.
Elm Park Events, Worcester: Keep an eye on what's happening at Elm Park throughout the summer. Movies, concerts, and community events pop up regularly.
Your town's summer concert series: Don't overlook what's happening locally. A lot of Central MA towns run their own free summer concert series. Check your town's events page and you might be surprised what's right around the corner.
🍻 Outdoor Eats & Summer Drinks
Patio season is real, and Central MA has some great spots to enjoy it.
Wormtown Brewery, Worcester: One of the best brewery patios in the area. Great beer, good food, and a laid-back atmosphere.
Greater Good Beer Co., Worcester: Another solid Worcester brewery with a nice space for hanging out.
Shrewsbury Street Dining, Worcester: Shrewsbury Street is Worcester's restaurant row. In the summer, many spots have outdoor seating. Walk it, browse, and pick what looks good.
The Fix Burger Bar, Worcester: Consistently great food and a cozy patio vibe. Their burgers are worth the trip.
Wachusett Brewing, Westminster: A bit of a drive, but the setting is beautiful and it's worth it for a relaxed afternoon.
The Neighborhood Tavern, Northborough: A local go-to with a welcoming, comfortable feel. Great for a low-key summer evening out.
The Mercantile, Worcester: A solid addition to the Worcester dining scene with a great atmosphere.
🚗 Day Trips & Weekend Getaways
One of the underrated things about living in Central MA is the location. We're within easy reach of some incredible day trip destinations.
Quabbin Reservoir, Ware/Belchertown: Peaceful, massive, and stunning. Great for hiking, birdwatching, and just taking in the quiet. No swimming, but absolutely worth the visit.
Deerfield & Shelburne Falls: Head up Route 2 and spend a day in the Pioneer Valley. The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls is genuinely magical in summer.
The Berkshires: Tanglewood, hiking, Mass MoCA, farm-to-table restaurants. A full weekend could easily be spent here. About 1.5 hours from Worcester.
Cape Cod: Yes, it's a bit of a haul (about 2.5 hours), but it's Massachusetts in summer. Worth doing at least once. Go midweek if you can.
Old Orchard Beach, Maine: About 2.5 hours north. A classic beach town with boardwalk vibes. Kids love it.
Northampton Arts District: A fun day trip for arts, boutique shopping, great coffee, and some of the best restaurant options in Western MA.
Boston Harbor Islands: Take the ferry from Boston and spend a day exploring the islands. Underrated and genuinely beautiful.
🏡 One More Thing (the Real Estate Part, I Promise It's Quick)
Summer is actually a great time to explore neighborhoods, even if you're not ready to buy yet.
Touring open houses "just to look" is something I genuinely encourage. It's how you learn what you like, what you don't, what's worth the price, and what neighborhoods feel like home. There's no pressure, and you might be surprised what's out there before the fall market picks up.
If you're curious about what's available in Central MA this summer, I'd love to help. Whether you're just starting to think about buying, or you're ready to make a move, feel free to reach out.
